Why Therapy for New Moms Matters:
The Ripple Effect on Your Family

Hey there, new mama! I'm Dr. Emily Turinas, a new mom therapist in Austin who's provided therapy for many new moms just like you, helping navigate the wild ride of early motherhood. I know you're probably thinking, "Therapy for new moms? Who has the time for that between diaper changes and sleep deprivation?" Trust me, I get it. But here's something that might surprise you: investing in maternal mental health can have amazing benefits not just for you, but for your little one too.

The Science Behind New Mom Mental Health

Let's talk research on therapy for new moms for a sec (don't worry, I'll keep it brief!). Studies have shown that when new moms seek therapy, it can lead to:

  • Stronger parent-child bonds: When you're feeling good, it's easier to connect with your baby.

  • More secure attachment: Your little one picks up on your emotional state more than you might realize.

  • Better cognitive outcomes for kids: Yep, your mental health can actually impact your child's brain development!

  • Reduced anxiety and behavioral issues in children: Your emotional wellbeing sets the tone for the whole family.

When Is the "Right" Time for New Mom Therapy?

Here's the thing: there's no perfect time to start therapy for moms. Some benefit from support during pregnancy with a perinatal therapy, others in those hazy newborn days, and some when their kids are toddlers or even older. The best time for new mom counseling is whenever YOU feel ready.

That said, if you're experiencing any of these, it might be time to reach out for therapy as a new mom:

  • Persistent sadness or anxiety

  • Difficulty bonding with your baby

  • Overwhelming feelings of guilt or inadequacy

  • Intrusive thoughts about harm coming to your baby

  • Struggles in your relationships

Making New Mom Therapy Work (Even When You're Exhausted)

I know finding time for therapy for new moms seems impossible when you're juggling a million things. But remember, taking care of yourself IS taking care of your baby. We can work together to find a schedule that fits your life – whether that's virtual new mom therapy sessions during nap time or even while you are breastfeeding I am here for it all.

Your Mental Health as a New Mom Matters

You wouldn't hesitate to see a doctor for a physical health concern, right? Your mental health deserves the same attention. By prioritizing your maternal mental health through therapy for moms, you're setting a powerful example for your child about self-care and emotional health.

Remember, seeking therapy as a new mom isn't a sign of weakness – it's a sign of strength and love for your family. You're doing an amazing job, mama, and as your perinatal psychologist in Austin, I'm here to support you every step of the way.

Common Questions About Perinatal Therapy in Austin

1 / What's the difference between a perinatal therapist and a regular therapist?

As a perinatal therapist in Austin, I have specialized training in maternal mental health, pregnancy, postpartum mood disorders, birth trauma, and the unique psychological challenges of motherhood. This specialized focus means I understand the nuances of perinatal mental health that general therapists may not have training in. I received my specialized training through Postpartum Support International and have years of experience working with women specifically managing these concerns. I also am a mother of two myself and have the lived experience of raising kids, pregnancy complications, NICU stays, and an antepartum hospitalization.

2 / Do I need a perinatal psychologist if I'm just feeling overwhelmed?

Absolutely. Maternal mental health matters at every level—from everyday overwhelm to clinical postpartum depression. You don't need to be in crisis to benefit from therapy for moms. Many of my clients come in simply feeling like they've lost themselves, and that's completely valid.

3 / Can I do virtual therapy, I have a newborn/ am pregnant?

Yes! I offer both in-person and virtual maternal mental health therapy throughout Texas and most states. Virtual therapy can be a great option when you have a newborn. Come as you are! I welcome you to breastfeed during session, have your baby contact nap, or just be in PJs. Once your baby is on a set nap schedule we can also plan around this and we can meet while your baby sleeps. This is a time for you in whatever way that looks in this phase of life.

4 / What's the difference between baby blues and postpartum depression?

Baby blues are common mood swings that typically resolve within two weeks. Postpartum depression is more intense and persistent, requiring professional support. If you're experiencing symptoms lasting beyond two weeks, postpartum depression therapy can help you feel like yourself again.
